Interest of Narendra Modi for Sanskrit

Narendra Modi is trying to reach out to his party's core voters in the language of the Vedas.

Days after he advocated construction of toilets before temples, his public relations machinery is out with the Sanskrit version of his official portal, narendramodi.in. While his comments like toilet first and then temples have irked many, the Sanskrit portal may help him deepen the connection with a particular section — seers, followers of scriptures and staunch believers of Hinduism — who form a committed group of BJP's voters.

The portal is already available in three languages — Gujarati, Hindi and English.

Modi, who tweets in 10 Indian languages and has e-books by or on him in couple of Indian languages, through the Sanskrit version symbolically pays his tribute to the ancient language that is no longer in use in day-to-day life.

"This was Modi's idea. He wanted the portal in Sanskrit," said a government official, adding that it's a "joint effort of the information technology team and a Sanskrit writer".

Modi's love for Sanskrit is well known; he facilitated the establishment of a Sanskrit university at Somnath.

His brief biography, tenure as CM, achievements, presence in international circuit, the BJP, awards bagged by Gujarat are some of the pages available in Sanskrit. The new version has Modi's selected blogs and speeches in Sanskrit. His quotes have been compiled under the title, Avtaraani. What the Sanskrit version doesn't offer is an update on events and functions on a day to today basis.

"Unlike the English version, the Sanskrit one is not likely to get frequent updates," said a source. The Sanskrit version gives readers a platform to communicate with Modi in the language by leaving him a message or invite in a special dialogue box.

Academy proposes Sanskrit-speaking camps to promote language

The Sanskrit Academy, Chandigarh, in collaboration with Department of Sanskrit, PU, is organising an Inter-University Sanskrit Speech Competition on September 29. Gurpreet Kaur Sapra, Director Higher Education, UT will be the chief guest at the event aimed at creating awareness about the Sanskrit language.

Universities across northern India, including Delhi University (DU), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeeth, New Delhi, Himachal Pradesh University (HPU), Shimla, Rashtriya Sansthan, New Delhi, Kurukshetra University and Panjabi University, Patiala are expected to participate. Also, students from city colleges, including Government College, Sector 11, Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector 42, MCM DAV College, Sector 36 are expected to participate.

Udyan Arya, Director of Sanskrit Academy said, "The Academy was founded on July 2, 2012 by students of the Department of Sanskrit, along with IAS officers, advocates and scientists who came forward to invoke students' interest in Sanskrit. We have already organised around 15 Sanskrit-speaking camps."

Talking about the importance of the language, Arya said the youth needed to be encourage to learn the Vedic language that was the source for any kind of knowledge.

అనగా అనగా ప్రజాపతి గారు.  ఆయనకు దేవతలు మానవులు దానవులు అందరూ సంతానమే.

ఆయన సంతానమైన వారందరికీ బ్రహ్మ జ్ఞానం అంటే చాలా గొప్పదని ఒకసారి తెలిసింది.  దాంతో వారు తమ తండ్రిని ఆశ్రయించి అదేమిటో తెలుసుకొనాలని ఉబలాట పడ్డారు.  వారి ఉబలాటం కేవలం తెలుసుకొనడం కోసం మాత్రమే కాదు.  దానిని పాటించి తీరాలనే ఉత్సాహం కూడా వారిలో ఉరకలు వేసింది.       

వారు అందరూ తమ తండ్రి చెంతకు చేరి బ్రహ్మ జ్ఞానం తమకు ప్రసాదించమని అడిగారు.  అది అందరికీ చెప్పేందుకు వీలు లేదు.  మీరందరూ ముందుగా బ్రహ్మచర్యం పాటించండి ఆనక చూద్దాం అని ప్రజాపతి గారు చెప్పారు.  తన సంతానమే కదా అని జాలి పడి అర్హత లేకున్నా పట్టాభిషేకం చేసే మన రాజకీయనాయకుల బాపతు కాదు ఆయన.                      

దాంతో వారందరూ బ్రహ్మచర్యం పాటిస్తూ గొప్ప తపస్సు చేసి అర్హత సంపాదించారు.

తరువాత దేవతలు మిగిలినవారి కంటే ముందుగానే ప్రజాపతి చెంతకు వచ్చి తమకు ఉపదేశం చేయమని కోరారు.  ప్రజాపతి సంతోషించి వారికి "ద" అనే ఒకే ఒక అక్షరాన్ని ఉపదేశించాడు.  

"నా ఉపదేశం మీకు అర్థమైందా?" అని వారిని అడిగాడు.  "

ఓ! బ్రహ్మాండంగా అర్థమైంది"  అని వారు బదులు చెప్పారు.  

"ఏమి అర్థమైంది?" అని ప్రజాపతి మరలా వారిని అడిగాడు.  

"ద" అనే అక్షరంతో మీరు మాకు "దమం" కలిగి ఉండండి అని ఉపదేశించారు" అని దేవతలు చెప్పారు.  

అది విని ప్రజాపతి సంతోషించాడు. 

"చక్కగా అర్థం చేసుకున్నారు" అని వారిని మెచ్చుకున్నాడు.  

దేవతలు ఆనందపడి ఆ ఉపదేశాన్ని పాటిస్తాం అని వెళ్లిపోయారు. 

(దమం అంటే ఐదు జ్ఞానేంద్రియాల మీద ఐదు కర్మేంద్రియాల మీద అదుపు సాధించడం.)

పంచేంద్రియాలు గుఱ్ఱాల వంటివి.  వాటిని అదుపు చేయగలిగామా , రథం వంటి దేహం చక్కగా పని చేస్తుంది.   వాటిని అదుపు చేయలేక పోయామా, రథం బోల్తా కొట్టినట్టే మన దేహయాత్ర కూడా బోల్తా కొడుతుంది.  అనారోగ్యాలతో తీసుకుని చావవలసిందే మరి.

తరువాత మానవులు ప్రజాపతి చెంతకు వచ్చి తమకు ఉపదేశం చేయమని కోరారు.

"ద" అనే అక్షరంతో మీరు మాకు "దానగుణం" కలిగి ఉండండి అని ఉపదేశించారు" అని మానవులు చెప్పారు.  

అది విని ప్రజాపతి సంతోషించాడు. 

"చక్కగా అర్థం చేసుకున్నారు" అని వారిని మెచ్చుకున్నాడు.  

మానవులు ఆనందపడి ఆ ఉపదేశాన్ని పాటిస్తాం అని వెళ్లిపోయారు.

ఈ ఆధునిక మానవులు గోదానం భూదానం అంటే నమ్మకం లేదంటారు.  సరే కానివ్వండి .  మరి కనీసం రక్తదానం నేత్రదానం లాంటివి కూడా పుణ్యప్రదాలే.  మరి కనీసం వాటినైనా చేయాలి.   నడుం బిగించి ప్రచారం కూడా చేయాలి.

కాసేపైన తరువాత దానవులు ప్రజాపతి చెంతకు వచ్చి తమకు ఉపదేశం చేయమని కోరారు.  

ప్రజాపతి సంతోషించి వారికి "ద"  అనే ఒకే ఒక అక్షరాన్ని ఉపదేశించాడు.

దానవులు  ఆనందపడి ఆ ఉపదేశాన్ని పాటిస్తాం అని వెళ్లిపోయారు.

అధమశ్రేణి జంతువులకే దయ ఉన్నపుడు ఉన్నతశ్రేణికి చెందిన ప్రాణి అయిన మానవుడికి దయ ఎందుకు ఉండదు?  

ఇదే ఉపదేశాన్ని మేఘాలు కూడా ఉరుముతూ వినిపిస్తూ ఉంటాయి.  ఆ మేఘాలు "ద ద ద" అని ఉరిమినప్పుడల్లా మనం "ఓహో,  ఇది ప్రజాపతి తన సంతానానికి చేసిన ఉపదేశం కదా" అని మనం గుర్తుతెచ్చుకోవాలి.  కేవలం గుర్తు తెచ్చుకుంటే చాలదు.  ఆ ఉపదేశాలను వారు ఎంత కష్టపడితే సాధించారో!  వాటిని నిత్యం స్మరిస్తూ వాటిని (దమాన్ని, దానగుణాన్ని దయాగుణాన్ని) ఆచరించేందుకు సంకల్పించి సఫలురం కావాలి.

Hundreds in Fiji take crash course in Sanskrit

Hundreds of people in Fiji are coming out to take a seven-day crash course of the Indian classical language Sanskrit.

Sanskrit scholar Gajendra Panda is in that south Pacific island nation at the invitation of the Fiji Sevashram Sangha (FSS) to impart knowledge of the language, the Fiji Times reported Saturday.

Even as the classes are being held now at Labasa in Macuata province on the island of Vanua Levu, the earlier classes in Fiji's capital Suva were well attended and the participants' number had to be restricted to 55, according to Swamy Sanyukta Nanda of the FSS.

“The group (in Suva) was organised into two smaller ones, one session being run by his wife and one by Panda. Participants were of all age groups and from all walks of life such as academics, workers and retired senior teachers,” Swamy Nanda was quoted as saying.

“The way this course was run was easy to understand and it captured the participants' interest and enthusiasm on the first day and they were compelled to take time every evening for classes.”

Established in 2000, FSS is an affiliated body of the Bharat Sevashram Sangha and operates two centres from Lautoka, Fiji's second largest city on ths island of Viti Levu, and Suva, and the Hindu Milan Mandir at Labasa.

According to Swamy Nanda, the way this course was run was easy to understand.

Participants in the Suva classes agreed while admitting that they never imagined that they could speak a word of Sanskrit in their life.

After Labasa, the classes will be held at Lautoka June 3-10.

Ethnic Indians comprise 37 percent of Fiji's total population of nearly 870,000.

Most of them are descendants of indentured labourers who were brought in from India between 1879 and 1916 to work in the country's sugarcane plantations.

A group of Sanskrit scholars has approached the Delhi High Court against a circular issued by the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, which allows students to study foreign languages such as German, French or Chinese instead of Sanskrit, as third language.

The KVS had issued a circular in 2010, directing Kendriya Vidyalayas all over the country to introduce foreign languages in place of Sanskrit as third language from the academic session 2011-12 in classes VI-VIII.

The PIL filed by the Sanskrit Shikshak Sangh, an umbrella body of teachers and scholars of the language, claims that the move not only violates the National Education Policy and the Three Language Formula of 1988, but would also do "irreparable damage to Sanskrit language and Indian culture."

The Three Language Formula prescribes teaching English, one regional language, and one language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. In Delhi, most schools offer Hindi, English and one 'modern Indian language' or Sanskrit.

Speaking to Newsline, Sanskrit Shikshak Sangathan General Secretary Dr V Dayalu said the organisation had exhausted all avenues before approaching the court. "We had sent representations to the KVS, sent letters to the HRD ministry, we even had the question raised in Parliament by some MPs, but the HRD ministry did not take any action. If the language dies out, Indian culture will be destroyed," said Dayalu.

Arguing before the High Court bench of Chief Justice D Murugesan and Justice Jayant Nath, advocate Monika Arora told the court that the circular issued by the KVS in2010 was also against the provision of the Right to Education Act since it called for training of the existing TGT language teachers in the languages so that they could eventually teach the foreign languages to the students of classes VI to VIII. "The eligibility criteria for teachers are also being violated," Arora said.

The counsel for the Centre however, told the court that the government was "taking steps to preserve the ancient Sanskrit language". "We want Sanskrit to come up," the counsel said.

The Chief Justice has now asked the petitioner to submit a list of KVs which offer Sanskrit as the third language in Delhi. "Will Sanskrit be counted as mother tongue in Delhi?" asked the bench.

The court issued notices to Ministry of Human Resource Development, CBSE and KVS and sought their responses by May 15.The case will come up for hearing next week.

"అనర్ఘమపి మాణిక్యం హేమాశ్రయమపేక్షతే /

వినాశ్రయం న శోభంతే పండితా వనితా లతాః//"

ఎంతటి విలువైన మాణిక్యానికైనా బంగారం ఆశ్రయంగా ఉన్నపుడే అది శోభిస్తుందట.  నిజమే కదా.  అదే విధంగా, పండితులైనా, స్త్రీలైనా, పూలతీగెలైనా ఆశ్రయం ఇచ్చేవారు, ఆలంబనగా నిలిచేవారు ఉంటేనే శోభిస్తార(య)ట.  

కాళిదాసుకు అంతటి పేరు ప్రఖ్యాతులు లభించాయంటే దానికి కారణం ఆయనకు ఆశ్రయం ఇచ్చిన విక్రమార్కుడే.  

అష్టదిగ్గజాలుగా పేరుగాంచిన అల్లసాని పెద్దనాదులను మనం ఈరోజు కూడా స్మరించుకుంటున్నామంటే అందుకు ఆంధ్రభోజుడు సాహితీ సమరాంగణ సార్వభౌముడు అని పేరు గాంచిన శ్రీకృష్ణదేవరాయలు అందుకు పూర్తిగా బాధ్యుడు.

అందువలన ఆనాడు మాణిక్యం వంటి పండితులకు బంగారం వంటి మహారాజులు ఆశ్రయంగా నిలిచారు.  ఆ రాజ్యాలు పోయినా వారి కీర్తి మాత్రం ఈనాటికి కూడా నిలిచే ఉంది.  

కాని, ఈనాడు అటువంటి మహారాజులు ఏరీ?  మహా ధనవంతులు అయినవారందరూ మహారాజులు కాలేరు.  రాజులు కానే కారు వీరు కేవలం బరువును కొలిచే తరాజులు మాత్రమే. 

 అందువల్ల మిత్రులారా, చింతించకండి.  

సాంబారును వడ్డించే గరిటెకు ఆ సాంబారు రుచి తెలుస్తుందని మనం భ్రమించడం మానివేద్దాం.  

గంధం కట్టెలు మోసినంత మాత్రాన గాడిదకు దాని సుగంధం ఆనందం కలిగిస్తుందని భావించడం మన తప్పు.

"ఉద్ధరేదాత్మనాత్మానం."
